Congratulations Byrne Dairy DriversRecently we had a team of drivers represent Byrne Dairy at the New York State Truck Driving Championships.
This event focuses of Safety, Knowledge, Skill and Professionalism. It is a two day event in which the drivers must compete in a number of events from a written knowledge test, a pre-trip inspection competition and a skills road course. It is a very challenging competition and our team has been busy studying, reviewing and practicing to compete against the best drivers in New York.
This year 100 drivers competed in the competition, Byrne Dairy had four drivers. Of the four drivers that competed, three of them placed in the top three of their prospective class. This is an outstanding achievement and a testament to the professionalism and quality of our drivers!
Kevin Shippee (Watertown)- 2nd Place – Tanker Trailer Class
Kyle Williams (Logistics Support Syracuse)- 2nd Place- Flatbed Trailer Class
Mike Harrison (Logistics Support Syracuse)- 3rd Place 5 Axle Van Trailer Class
Bob Wojcikowski (Syracuse)- Twin Trailers Class
In addition to the outstanding achievement accomplished by these drivers I would also like to note that during the skills road course there is another competition held by all of the companies that have drivers competing, This competition is a BBQ Cook off in which each company is judged. Please congratulate Scott Wallace as his Crab stuffed, bacon wrapped marinated pork loin won the competition! Congratulations to all.

Byrne Dairy to Launch New Extended Shelf Life (ESL) Family of Single-Serve Milks Syracuse, NY, November 16, 2009 – In a continuing effort to utilize advanced dairy processing technologies designed to provide their customers with the most desirable and convenient packaging options, Byrne Dairy will be launching its new ESL 16 oz. product line January 1, 2010. The line consists of existing milks and newly formulated flavored milks processed under Ultra High Temperature (UHT) conditions at Byrne’s Ultra Dairy facility. A newly installed Sidel Predis™ uses a Combi machine that operates with a single piece of equipment for blow molding, filling and capping, guaranteeing total food safety and helps enhance both the quality and shelf life of products. The inline rotary filler will produce up to 300 bottles of dairy and non-dairy products per minute and is the first of its kind in the United States. The filler represents the latest technology in sustainable and precision manufacturing with bottle preforms heated and blown from fully recyclable PET plastic. To enhance their visibility, impact and brand awareness with the consumer, an entirely new family of labels* has been designed.
The flavor varieties include Chocolate (3.25% fat), Low Fat Chocolate (1% fat,), Low Fat Strawberry (1% fat), Fat Free White, Low Fat White (2% fat), Vitamin D, Iced Cappuccino and Iced Mocha Cappuccino. Additionally, a complete line of flavored non-dairy creamers will also be available.
The ESL process will result in products with shelf life of up to 90 days (with refrigeration) opening up new warehousing and distribution opportunities as well as expansion into convenient stores, quick service restaurants, food vending companies and food distributors across the country. Byrne’s great-tasting products will also be available in 12 and 8 oz. bottles for customers wanting either private label or the recognized Byrne Dairy brand name.
According to Carl Byrne, president and CEO, “Longer shelf life clearly gives our customers added value… fewer deliveries and longer date codes mean that less product will need to be thrown away. For the consumer, the precision neck finish of the bottle allows us to eliminate the often-challenging foil seal. As a result, children can now easily open and re-seal the bottle, giving parents a safe, convenient and healthy alternative to carbonated drinks.”
Another leading-edge feature for customer’s specialized product development, Byrne’s Ultra Dairy Pilot Plant can create unique flavor profiles in batch samples. Here products can come to life in a cost-effective, controlled environment and be ready for launch without costly delays.

Byrne Dairy Receives SQF Certification for Food Safety and QualitySyracuse, NY, March 12, 2009 - Byrne Dairy’s three manufacturing facilities have achieved Level 3 Certification in the SQF Program. The SQF (Safe Quality Food) System is a HACCP-based (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) quality management system that uses proven methods to reduce the incidence of unsafe food reaching the marketplace. Level 3 is the highest achievement level and recognizes that the manufacturer has a comprehensive food safety and quality management system. “Byrne Dairy has always put food safety first at our facilities. This certification should reassure our customers that we hold ourselves and our suppliers accountable to maintain the highest quality standards possible,” stated Bill Byrne, Vice President of Quality.
The SQF certification process involves the training of company "practitioners" who train the plant teams on SQF principles and methods. When the in-house practitioners have completed their training and documentation, the system must be audited by an independent, third-party. This auditor conducts a documentation and plant process review. The SQF certification team then reviews the auditor’s report and they award the certification status. SQF certification is rapidly becoming the accepted, international standard for food safety systems. Manufacturing plants that commit to the SQF system are making an ongoing commitment to produce safe, quality food, and operate in compliance with applicable food safety regulations. For more information about SQF certification, you can visit www.sqfi.com.

Press Release - Byrne first American dairy to adopt Sidel’s Predis™ solution Innovative dry preform decontamination system in Sidel Combi line achieves ESL at lower cost, higher efficiency vs. conventional methods
As market demand for flavored milk, coffee creamer, and other premium dairy products grows, Byrne Dairy sought to expand capacity in order to better serve customers in the Eastern United States. “Our goals were extended shelf life, provide consumer-preferred packaging, and a competitive cost structure,” said Carl Byrne, President. “We initially evaluated aseptic and conventional ESL filling technologies, but found them cost prohibitive. Package weight and waste water generated also made the solutions not as sustainable as we had hoped.”
Byrne’s Ultra division ultimately selected a Sensofill FMm Combi Ultra line from Sidel. This 18,000 bottle/hour complete line incorporates Sidel’s Predis™ dry preform decontamination system with bottle blow molding and filling on a Sidel Combi line. “No other solution – conventional ESL or aseptic – offered us the efficiency, sustainability, and competitive cost structure that Sidel could,” according to Byrne. “With the desired ESL, a lightweight PET bottle, no waste water, and no empty bottle handling, there was no question.”
“Byrne is a pioneer in dairy. The company is taking advantage of Sidel’s Combi technology, already widely deployed in higher volume beverage segments including water and soft drinks. Combined with Sidel’s proprietary Predis™ dry preform decontamination system, this enables Byrne to leapfrog competition with optimized packaging, and water and energy savings,” said David Schroeder, North American Zone Vice President for Sidel.
The line will produce ESL milk, flavored milk, and coffee creamers in 8, 12, 32, and 64 oz. sizes. Back Up Top |
