History of Byrne Glass Milk Bottles

In January of 1933, Matthew V. Byrne, a native Syracusan, started processing and delivering milk with his family name on the bottle. He gradually built his dairy into one of the most successful business ventures in the city.

The reason was simple. Along with his business sense and ambition, he brought quality products. The first Byrne processing plant was located in the City of Syracuse known as “Byrne Square Building.” From that first Syracuse plant, Byrne delivered fresh milk, cream and other fluid dairy products to area homes and stores via horse-drawn wagons.

In 1977, Byrne became the last local dairy to discontinue home deliveries. This was in part to gas shortages in the ’70s and a more mobile lifestyle. All routeman were offered other jobs within the company.

Over 90 years later, Byrne still produces The Best Milks™, including Byrne Hollow Farm organic milk.

Byrne has gone from delivering to a few local homes to serving schools, hospitals, restaurants, and supermarkets throughout the U.S.
