One of our core values at Byrne Dairy is safety. Our Decision Based Safety Management (DBSM) program encourages safety practices and accountability through positive engagement.

Each department at Byrne has its own “DBSM Lite” card: a checklist to gauge an employee’s behavior, ergonomics, use of PPE, and other safety procedures. Employees observe their coworkers and mark each action on the list as “safe” or “unsafe.” Afterward, the observing team member shares constructive feedback on what their colleague did well and where they could improve.

“It’s those kinds of brief interactions that drive the safety program. We want to encourage each other to do the right thing all the time,” says Will F., Byrne’s senior environmental health and safety director.

The process serves as a friendly reminder to minimize hazards in the workplace and is not meant to be used as a penalty or punishment. In fact, employees who participate can win prizes! Each month, Byrne draws a name from those who submitted DBSM cards. Prizes include engraved tumblers, insulated lunch bags, and other Byrne swag.

“We are beginning to see traction in our overall safety measures,” says Will, adding that the company has seen a reduction in workplace injuries since implementing the DBSM program.
